"La Pieve di Santa Maria a Spaltenna"
(the parish Church of Santa Maria a Spaltenna)

Good morning from Chianti, here we are nearby the ancient Castle of Spaltenna, where even before the year 1003 (as reported in the papal edict by Pope Pasquale II) the very ancient parish Church of San Pietro in Avenano stood, then named Pieve di Santa Maria a Spaltenna.
This church alike its “ sister” churches of San Giusto in Salcio, San Polo in Rosso, San Marcellino and San Vincenti, represents a rural settling dating back to the Romans. All those parish churches shared the same plan with three naves divided by quadrangular cross-section pillars and ending with a semi-circular apse.
The pleasant and special wall covering with ashlars Alberese stones in ash-grey colour also characterises the high tower bell at the side of the façade. The existence of two keeps on the corner below the big building and some archers witness the characteristic of the building. The tower bell is still well-kept and today the group consisting of the parish church, the tower bell and the inner courtyard (with cistern pit) are absorbed in the architecture of the castle of Spaltenna. The monastic premises annexed to the Church and transformed into a farmhouse since a long time, still hold the ruins of the cloister as well as of some other structures already part of the Romanesque monastery.
Not far from here, and also dating back to the 10th century is the Castle of Cacchiano, built by the Ricasoli Firidolfi family, as part of the defensive works built, together with the Castles of Brolio and of Meleto, to protect Florentine territory from forays of the Republic of Siena. Towards the end of the 15th century the Cacchiano’s citadel was remarkably damaged and when during the 16th century peace was declared, the castle lost its defensive role and was transformed into the country residence of the family.
